The Best Things to Do in Bangkok

11 min read · Updated May 2026

Bangkok is one of Asia's most exhilarating cities — chaotic, spiritual, delicious, and endlessly surprising. From golden temple complexes to futuristic shopping malls and legendary street food, Bangkok rewards travelers who embrace its contradictions.

Temples: The Grand Palace and Beyond

The Grand Palace is Bangkok's most iconic sight — a dazzling complex of buildings, halls, and temples including Wat Phra Kaew (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha). It requires modest dress (no shorts or sleeveless tops — sarongs are available at the entrance). Wat Pho houses the famous Reclining Buddha (46m long) and is also one of the best places to get a traditional Thai massage. Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) across the Chao Phraya river is beautifully lit at night and offers views from its central prang.

Expert Tips

  • Grand Palace dress code is strictly enforced — bring a scarf even in hot weather
  • Take the cross-river ferry to Wat Arun — it costs a few baht and is more atmospheric than going by road
  • Visit temples early morning before heat and crowds build

Street Food and Markets

Bangkok is arguably the world's street food capital. Pad Thai, green curry, papaya salad, grilled satay, mango sticky rice — all are better here than anywhere else. Yaowarat (Chinatown) is the most concentrated street food experience, especially at night. Chatuchak Weekend Market is one of the largest markets in the world — 15,000 stalls selling everything imaginable. Or Tor Kor fresh market near Chatuchak sells the finest Thai produce.

Expert Tips

  • Yaowarat is best Thursday–Sunday evenings
  • Chatuchak only operates Friday evening and all day Saturday and Sunday
  • The floating markets (Damnoen Saduak, Amphawa) are best reached on a day trip

Modern Bangkok: Rooftops, Malls, and the Chao Phraya

Bangkok has some of the world's best rooftop bars — Vertigo at the Banyan Tree, Octave at Marriott, and the famous Sky Bar from the Hangover films (now called Lebua State Tower). MBK and Chatuchak are markets, but Siam Paragon and IconSiam are extraordinary malls — IconSiam on the Chao Phraya riverfront even has a floating market inside. The Chao Phraya River Express boat is cheap, scenic, and the fastest way to avoid Bangkok traffic between the Old City and the modern centre.

Expert Tips

  • Sky Bar (Lebua) has a smart dress code — no shorts or sandals
  • The BTS Skytrain (BTS card) is the best way to get around modern Bangkok
  • Book a Thai cooking class at least 1 day in advance — popular schools fill up quickly
