Bali is more than beaches and Instagram sunsets — it's a living Hindu culture of extraordinary richness, surrounded by volcanic mountains, rice terraces, and warm ocean. This guide covers all of Bali's regions and how to see the island beyond the tourist trail.
Ubud: Culture and Nature
Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali. The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is an enchanting jungle temple complex inhabited by long-tailed macaques. Tegalalang Rice Terraces are UNESCO-listed and spectacular — visit before 8am to beat crowds and the heat. The Ubud Royal Palace hosts traditional Kecak and Legong dance performances most evenings. Tirta Empul temple, where Balinese Hindus perform purification rituals, is a powerful spiritual experience.
Expert Tips
- ✓Tegalalang is best visited at 7–8am before tour buses arrive
- ✓Kecak fire dance at Pura Uluwatu at sunset is one of Bali's most atmospheric experiences
- ✓Rent a scooter in Ubud for the rice terrace villages — roads are manageable for beginners
Beaches: Seminyak, Canggu, and Uluwatu
Bali's beach scene is highly varied. Seminyak and Kuta are lively and commercial — sunset beach clubs, surf schools, and developed infrastructure. Canggu is the digital nomad and surf capital — more laid-back than Seminyak with better waves (Echo Beach is excellent). Uluwatu on the Bukit Peninsula has dramatic cliff-top temples, hidden cove beaches (Padang Padang, Bingin), and some of the best surf in Asia.
Expert Tips
- ✓Kuta and Seminyak beaches have strong rip currents — only swim in patrolled areas
- ✓Bingin and Impossibles beaches in Uluwatu require a short hike down steep stairs
- ✓Sunset at Tanah Lot sea temple (7km from Canggu) is a classic Bali experience
North and East Bali
North Bali is largely overlooked by tourists — and extraordinarily beautiful. Munduk offers mountain lakes, waterfalls, and coffee and clove plantations. Lovina Beach has calm black-sand beaches and dolphin watching tours (sunrise). East Bali's Mount Agung is Bali's sacred volcano and highest peak — guided sunrise treks are challenging but unforgettable. Tirta Gangga water palace is one of Bali's most beautiful and least visited royal gardens.
Expert Tips
- ✓Mount Agung trek requires a guide and fitness — book through licensed operators only
- ✓The drive from Ubud to Amed via the volcanic highlands is one of Asia's best road trips
- ✓Munduk is significantly cooler than south Bali — bring a layer
