About Porto

Porto is Portugal's soulful second city — a UNESCO World Heritage riverside city of azulejo-tiled facades, port wine cellars, historic tramways, and some of Europe's most beautiful baroque churches. Porto's Ribeira waterfront and Douro Valley wine country make it one of Europe's most romantic destinations.

❓ FAQ

Is Porto or Lisbon better to visit?

Both are excellent. Porto is smaller, more intimate, and in many ways more charming. Lisbon has more sights. Doing both (3 hrs apart by train) is ideal.

What wine should I try in Porto?

Port wine obviously — but also try the outstanding Douro Valley table wines. Tawny Port is excellent; LBV and Vintage ports are world-class.

Is the Livraria Lello worth visiting?

The stunning Art Nouveau bookshop (a Harry Potter inspiration) charges €8 entry (redeemable against purchases). Worth seeing once, but very crowded.
