The Best Things to Do in Florence

10 min read · Updated May 2026

Florence is where the Renaissance was born, and its concentration of art, architecture, and culture per square mile is unmatched on earth. From Michelangelo's David to Botticelli's Birth of Venus, Brunelleschi's dome to the Ponte Vecchio at dawn, Florence is a city that moves even the least artistic of visitors.

Uffizi Gallery & Accademia

The Uffizi Gallery is one of the oldest and most important art museums in the world, housing Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Primavera, Leonardo da Vinci's Annunciation, and Caravaggio's Medusa among thousands of masterpieces. The Galleria dell'Accademia contains Michelangelo's David — the 5.17-meter marble statue is even more overwhelming in person than any photograph suggests.

Expert Tips

  • Book Uffizi tickets months in advance — this cannot be overstated
  • Accademia requires advance booking too, especially May–October
  • Allow 3–4 hours minimum for the Uffizi

The Duomo & Historic Center

Florence's cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore, with Brunelleschi's magnificent dome, is the defining image of the city. Climb the 463 steps inside the dome for the most extraordinary view in Tuscany. The separate Campanile (bell tower) and Baptistery are equally worth visiting. The Piazza della Signoria is the historic center of civic life, dominated by the Palazzo Vecchio.

Expert Tips

  • Book Duomo dome entry online — timed entry is required
  • Climb the Campanile for the best exterior view of the dome itself
  • The Baptistery's Gates of Paradise are extraordinary close-up

Oltrarno & Tuscan Day Trips

The Oltrarno (south bank of the Arno) is Florence's most atmospheric neighborhood — artisan workshops, the Pitti Palace, and the Boboli Gardens. The Piazzale Michelangelo offers the classic panoramic view of Florence at sunset. Day trips to Siena (1.5 hours), San Gimignano (1.5 hours), and Chianti wine country (30 minutes) are among the best in Italy.

Expert Tips

  • Piazzale Michelangelo at sunrise is magical with no crowds
  • The Oltrarno for dinner — fewer tourists, better food
  • Rent a car for Chianti — the scenic drive is part of the experience
